Abadía Retuerta Selección Especial 2021 is the flagship wine of Abadía Retuerta, produced at the estate in Sardón de Duero (Valladolid) under the Protected Designation of Origin Abadía Retuerta. It is crafted from a meticulous blend of the finest wines sourced from the estate's 54 individual vineyard plots ("pagos"), each vinified separately to preserve its unique identity. The 2021 vintage is composed of 62% Tempranillo, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 4% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, a blend that perfectly reflects the winery's hallmark style of balance, elegance and aromatic complexity. The wine is aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels, resulting in a refined, structured wine with outstanding ageing potential.

Under proper cellaring conditions, Abadía Retuerta Selección Especial 2021 will continue to evolve beautifully through approximately 2033–2035, developing greater complexity with notes of tobacco, cocoa, sweet spices, leather and balsamic nuances while preserving its freshness, harmony and elegance.

Decant for 30 to 60 minutes before serving to allow the wine to fully express its elegance, aromatic complexity and perfect balance.

Description:

The vineyards are spread over north-facing slopes up to altitudes of 850 metres.

Weather:

The winter rains ensured a good start to the cycle. After a warm spring, budding began in mid-April, giving way to a May of high temperatures and rain, so the vines grew very quickly. The summer was very warm, but September was not excessively hot and was marked by rain, which conditioned the characteristics of the vintage, which was softer and fresher than the previous one.

Vinification:

The harvest began on September 16 and ended on October 16, 2020.

Fermentation took place in small stainless steel tanks where malolactic fermentation also took place.

Aging for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.

 

The Wine Advocate:

2020 was a cooler year with more rain, following the path of years like 2016 and 2018. The 2020 Selección Especial, produced with 70% Tempranillo, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, 4% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, is harmonious and moderately ripe at 14% alcohol, with nice balancing freshness. It matured for 12 months in French and American oak (35%) barrels, one-third of them new. They harvested it before it rained, and the wine has more herbal aromas and feels a little more Bordelais, balsamic, even minty. The oak is neatly integrated and folded into the fruit. 474,626 bottles produced. There are multiple lots of this wine.. - Luis Gutiérrez.
