Pago Capellanes Rerserva 2017

Description:

Pago de Los Capellanes Reserva is made with grapes from old vines (more than 80 years old on average) selected from different plots in the Burgos town of Pedrosa del Duero.

These vineyards are located at more than 750 meters

Age:
More than 80 years old.
Ground:
Clayey-calcareous, stony, very poor in fertility and low production.
Weather:

The 2017 vintage was marked by the severe frost that occurred towards the end of April, with a significant drop in production and a delay in the growing season. The latter was later alleviated thanks to the recovery of good temperatures and rainfall, achieving a harvest of extraordinary quality.

Yield:
5,000 kilograms per hectare.
Vinification:

Selected harvest in boxes. Cold pre-fermentation maceration for 3 days below 12º C. Sowing of selected native yeasts. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, with pumping over and phenolic control of the wine must in maceration. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrels at low temperature and periodic stirring of lees.

Aging:

Ageing for 14 months in 225-litre French oak barrels with extra-fine grain. The wine is bottled without any clarification or stabilisation treatment, so it is possible that over time a natural sediment of colouring matter or tartrates may appear, which is an unequivocal sign of purity and integrity. It will evolve positively in the bottle over the next 10 years.

Tim Atkin:

The bodega's Reserva is made with a combination of purchased and its own grapes, drawn from Pedrosa de Duero and the surrounding villages and is a classic expression of the modern Pago de los Capellanes style. Intense, glossy and concentrated, it has incense and wild herb aromas, ripe fig, blackberry and clementine flavours and a frame of stylish, mocha oak.

Decanter:

Lovely! A very traditional style with smoky, leathery and gamey scents and flavors, plus drying tannins. Slightly herbal and volatile, but classic Ribera.
